The Sensory Processing Disorder Foundation is pleased to present Don Meyer, director of Sibling Support Project, teaching his Sibshop program model. What are Sibshops? Sibshops are pedal-to-the-metal celebrations of the many contributions made by brothers and sisters of children with special needs. Sibshops acknowledge that being the brother or sister of a person with special needs is for some a good thing, for others a not-so-good-thing, and for many, somewhere in-between. They reflect a belief that brothers and sisters have much to offer one another. Sibshops are a spirited mix of new games, new friends, and discussion activities. They create an opportunity for siblings to obtain peer support and education within a recreational context. Originally developed for eight- to thirteen-year old siblings of children with developmental disabilities, the Sibshop model is easily adaptable for slightly younger and older children as well as for siblings of children with other special needs including cancer, hearing impairments, epilepsy, emotional disturbances and HIV-positive status. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Lifelong Issues Faced by Brothers and SistersWhen: January 27, 2012 9am-2:30pm Who Should Attend: Parents and other adult family members and services providers from educational, mental health, social services and public health fields Cost: $39 Workshop Description: Lively large-group discussion format helps participants learn about the concerns and opportunities frequently experienced by brothers and sisters of people with special needs. Participants share what they have observed in their families or the families they serve. Participants also learn what researchers, clinicians, and siblings themselves say about growing up with siblings who have special needs. Implications for parents and service providers will be discussed throughout the workshop. Don Meyer will also moderate a panel of brothers and sisters who will discuss life with siblings who have special needs. Along the way, panelists will offer suggestions to parents and providers. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Starting Your Own Sibshop: Facilitator TrainingWhen: January 27-28, 2012 9am-4:00pm Who Should Attend: special needs service providers, social workers, special education teachers and professors, psychologists, nurses, adult siblings of people with special needs, parents and others who want to learn how to run local Sibshops Cost: $189 Workshop Description: This workshop is designed to train new Sibshop facilitators and administrators--that is, adult siblings, service providers, parents and others who want to learn how to run a local Sibshop. During the two days of the Sibshop workshop, facilitators in training will learn about sibs' lifelong concerns, find out how to organize a local Sibshop, and experience what a Sibshop is all about as they join Don Meyer and local brothers and sisters for a four-hour long demonstration Sibshop. Upon completion of the two-day workshop, participants are considered "first-generation" Sibshop trainees and may, upon registration, start their own local Sibshop. Workshop Location:
